. defense secretary leon panetta said the u.s. would take "all necessary steps" to deal with the attack and hostage taking. in syria, car bombers targeted the northern city of idlib today. state media said at least 22 people died. the opposition said it was 24-- most of them, government troops. the attacks came a day after two large explosions killed 87 people at the main university in aleppo. classes were suspended today. iraq witnessed its own string of bombings that killed at least 33 people. the city of kirkuk suffered the worst attack when a car bomber blew himself up outside the offices of a major kurdish party. 21 people were killed in that bombing and another nearby, and nearly 200 were wounded. a u.s. marine pleaded guilty today to urinating on the remains of dead taliban fighters in afghanistan. staff sergeant edward deptola submitted his plea at camp lejeune, north carolina. images of the incident surfaced last year, sparking an international furor and outrage in afghanistan. another marine pleaded guilty to similar charges last month. three others were given administrative p

's choice of chuck hagel for defense secretary. schumer said today the former republican senator has now addressed claims that he's anti- israel, among other things. california democrat barbara boxer also issued a statement of support. the backing of two prominent jewish senators is expected to help hagel ease concerns among other, pro-israel lawmakers. a major debt rating agency warned today the u.s. could lose its top credit status if there's a delay in raising the debt ceiling. the federal government is expected to exceed its borrowing limit by march, unless congress acts. if fitch does downgrade u.s. debt, it would join standard and poor's, which took that action in 2011 during the last debt ceiling debate. the u.s. house moved to pass a hurricane sandy relief bill this evening. $17 billion would go for immediate recovery in the affected northeastern states. another $33 billion is for long- term spending. some republicans argued that much of the money isn't for emergency relief at all. california's tom mcclintock called for stripping that funding out. >> according to the congressiona

on the waterfront and next to the sugar factory. crews caught this fire defensively from the shoreline spraying water on it from the shore and eventually got the boat in there to find out. a battalion chief i talked to said the fire appears suspicious for a number of reasons. >> there's nobody living on the pier. there are no sources of electricity or other obvious sources of ignition. >> reporter: on top of that, there was also another fire at this same pier two years ago, according to firefighters. i asked the battalion chief this morning if transients may have been camping out inside this structure on the pier this morning. he said that's certainly a possibility that will be looked into it as arson investigators move in and try to figure out exactly what sparked this fire this morning. we bring you out here live. fire are yous -- crews are still putting water on some of the hot spots on the pier that caught fire. i also want to mention this did have an impact on the amtrak and southern train line. trains were stopped but they are now moving again. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> 7:03.
